Homeopathy and Chicken Pox

Homeopathy and Chicken Pox

Chickenpox is a contagious infection caused by the varicella zoster virus.

Symptoms begin with small raised red bumps, which fill with fluid becoming itchy blisters or vesicles.  These usually spread over the entire body. Eventually, these blisters will pop, dry, form scabs, and finally heal.  Other symptoms include fever, fatigue, and loss of thirst and/or appetite. Symptoms usually last 7–10 days.

Chickenpox is most commonly seen in young children, and often considered a rite of passage.  For the majority of people, it is a perfectly harmless, if unpleasant childhood illness.  However, pregnant women (who have not previously had chicken pox) and people with a weakened immune system are more susceptible to complications and should avoid those known to have come into contact with the disease.

Homeopathic Remedies for Chicken Pox

As always, homeopathic remedies are best prescribed to match the individual’s symptom picture, but the following remedies may be useful:

Pulsatilla

When the patient is clingy and weepy with a moderate fever and little thirst, and feels better in open air and worse in the heat at night.

Belladonna

Hot dry skin, fever and flushed complexion.  Dilated pupils, aversion to light with difficulty sleeping.

Rhus Tox

Eruptions are excessively itchy, filled with pus and worse for itching and at night.  Very restless.

Ant Tart

Chicken Pox accompanied by a rattling cough and a white coated tongue.

Mercurius

Eruptions may have green pus, with excessive salivation and offensive breath and swollen glands.

Simple Home remedies

Bicarbonate of Soda

Relieves itching by restoring the skins pH and acid/alkaline balance.  Add 4tbs to a warm bath.

Honey

Honey is a natural antiviral and anti-inflammatory.  It reduces itching and aids healing.

Oatmeal Bath

As a natural antiviral and anti-inflammatory, applying oatmeal can help relieve itching and pain, while helping fight the virus.  Oatmeal also helps to promote healing and prevent excessive scarring.  Encased in muslin, oatmeal can be suspended under a running tap while filling your bath.  Lavender, Tea Tree or Rosemary essential oils can be added.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera can be applied fresh from the plant to combat the virus, aid healing and prevent scarring.

Basil

Relieves itching and irritation, while fighting the virus.  Steep leaves in hot water, allow to cool and apply to pox.

Chamomile

Apply directly to pox to sooth, calm, fight the virus and any infection.

Tea Tree Oil

Suspend in carrier oil and apply to pox to fight the virus and prevent infection.

Increase vitamins A, C and D to strengthen the immune system.

Take probiotic and Echinacea to support the immune system.

Take Garlic to help prevent secondary infection.

Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

If the rash is excessively painful or spreads to the eyes, or symptoms are accompanied by dizziness, palpitations, shaking, neck stiffness, vomiting, shortness of breath, loss of coordination or a fever in excess of 40°c contact a doctor.

Similarly, if somebody in your home has a deficient immune system, or there is a child under 6 months, contact a doctor.

Dental Health

Homeopathic remedies are inexpensive, non-toxic, last forever and can be used at any age, so it’s always worth trying a remedy, even if it’s just to ameliorate symptoms while waiting for dental treatment.  Below is a list of remedies that could be most useful for dental symptoms.

Potency and frequency

As a general rule, with acute symptoms, a potency of around 12-30 would be adequate, taken from every 30 minutes to 3 times a day depending on the severity of symptoms.  Remedies can be ceased as soon as the desired reaction is achieved.  And remember, in an emergency, the correct potency is the one you have.

Homeopathy for Ski Injuries

I thought it was about time I combined the two things in life which take up most of my time; Homeopathy and Skiing.

Homeopathy is a non-toxic, non-addictive form of medicine, which can be taken in place of or alongside orthodox medicine.   It is perfectly safe for all ages including children, babies and pregnant women due to its gentle nature.   It simply works by stimulating the body to heal itself much quicker than it otherwise would, getting you back out there as soon as possible.   For athletes at the top of their game, it is worth noting that homeopathic remedies are perfectly legal in competition, unlike many orthodox medications.

I would like to offer a few simple self help suggestions, on how to reduce both suffering and recovery time following ski related injury, with homeopathic remedies.   These are simple, cheap and effective little pills, which can be taken on trips away, or carried in your boot bag when you visit your local ski centre.   You’ll be glad you did.

Bruising and Shock

Bruising is obviously an occupational hazard in any sport, but particularly when throwing yourself off a kicker or landing badly off the end of a rail in the park.   Most people have heard of the homeopathic remedy Arnica, and many are already well aware of its healing power.   Taken as soon as possible after injury, Arnica will quickly relieve pain, swelling and move the area through the bruising stage for a quick recovery.   What many people don’t realise is that arnica is not just for bruising.   It is also used for shock, and for muscle fatigue.   So pack this one when you go away for use following any injury or just at the end of a hard day.   Take it every 10 minutes initially following injury, cutting down to two to three times daily until pain and swelling is relieved.   Arnica is also available in gel or crème.

Tendons and Ligaments

Obviously the most common injury for the skier is ligament damage.   In the initial stages, Arnica is a great remedy to reduce swelling and pain, followed by Ruta to provide further pain relief and speed up the healing of the ligament.   Take it every two hours initially, reducing to four times daily once the pain and swelling is under control.

Fractures

Should the worst happen and you finish up with a visit to A&E there are a couple of remedies that can really speed up bone repair.   The first remedy to keep in mind is Arnica to reduce swelling, shock and bring the bruising out.   After a few days, when the bone is fully set and swelling has reduced, it’s time to introduce   Symphytum (comfrey or knit-bone).   Taken twice daily, this little remedy can really reduce the time the bones takes to mend, and repeatedly leaves hospital staff stunned when they remove casts much sooner than expected.

For more serious injuries, those that don’t appear to heal and other common problems such as plantar fasciitis, bone spurs and Osgood Schlatter’s it’s always best to get professional advice.

Ski carefully!

If You Can't Beat Them, Join Them - A Drink To Your Health

As a break from the usual ‘Health Guru’ piece about the joys of abstinence and how we should all avoid anything remotely fun, I would like to offer the following suggestions of how you can let your hair down and enjoy a Christmas tipple over the festive without feeling guilty.

Homeopathy for Travel

Because Homeopathic Remedies are not condition specific, they are really handy in acute or emergency situations.   For this reason, they make a perfect travel kit.   Just a handful of remedies can see you through a broad spectrum of situations ranging from a nasty fall, stings and bites, through to the dreaded holiday diarrhoea.   To help you on your way to a stress free holiday without any of those time wasting trips to the local doctor, here's a list of remedies to choose from when you pack.

Arnica
Not surprisingly Arnica is top of the list.   It really is a 'don't leave home without it' remedy.   Useful where there has been any kind of shock or trauma, Arnica is invaluable for bruising, shock or exhaustion.
Apis
A great remedy for bites and stings which appear swollen and red, with burning or stinging pain and restlessness.   If there is relief with cold applications, Apis is the remedy.
Arg Nit
For travellers who are anxious in the lead up to travel and may also find they are bloated and a little gassy, Arg Nit may come in handy.   Also useful in nervous diarrhoea.
Arsenicum
Arsenicum is useful in the treatment of vomiting and diarrhoea, so is a handy remedy for those who may be affected by digestive problems on holiday, or are suffering food poisoning.   Other symptoms would include chills, exhaustion and thirst and would feel worse during the night.
Belladonna
A really useful remedy for burning hot fevers, which may come on suddenly.   A brilliant remedy for sunstroke.
Cantharis
An important burn remedy which also is great for sunburn.   Because of the burning nature of Cantharis, it is also really good for cystitis where there is pain before or after urination.
Chamomilla
A great remedy for ill, fretful children who want to be held.   They often have one red cheek.
China
An important remedy for dehydration, to really useful for heatstroke, diarrhoea and vomiting where there has been much fluid loss.

Homeopathy and Arthritis

Arthritis is a condition of the skeletal system, which leads to inflammation in one of more affected joints.  There are as many as 100 different variations of Arthritis, the most common being Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Osteoarthritis
This is a chronic degenerative disease which is   characterised   by an overgrowth in cartilage and bone in the joints of one or more areas of the body.   Osteoarthritis most commonly appears in middle and old age and while the rate is slightly higher in women, it affects both sexes.   Due to the aging process, wear and tear, obesity or poor posture the cartilage which protects the end of each bone becomes thin, exposing the bone and causing it to thicken.   Joints become inflamed and extremely painful.   The most common sites are those most affected by weight bearing, for example the knees and hips.   Symptoms include pain, stiffness, swelling, decrease in mobility and enlarged joints.
Conventional treatment includes pain relief, surgery to replace or reshape or fuse the bones , diet changes and anti-depressants.

Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease affecting the connective tissue of the joints.   Women are three times more likely to develop RA than men, and it can occur at any age, though is more commonly seen between the ages of 30 and 60.   Symptoms include pain, loss of mobility, joint deformity, muscle wastage, contraction, weight loss, lethargy and depression.
Orthodox treatment includes heat, nutritional changes, passive exercise to aid mobility, rest, pain relief and anti-inflammatory   drugs, steroid injections and surgery.

Homeopathic Treatment
In homeopathy we do not treat any named disease, but rather select a remedy to match an individuals unique collection of symptoms.   Due to this individualistic approach there are a great many remedies which may be used in the treatment of Arthritis.   A detailed case analysis including physical symptoms (type and location of pain, inflammation, sensations etc), details of anything which might make symptoms better or worse (e.g. heat, cold, damp, certain foods or movements etc), mental and emotional symptoms, sleep patterns, food preferences, family history etc.   All this information is combined to find the perfect remedy for the patients own experience of Arthritis.
Homeopathic treatment in a chronic condition such as this is a long term thing, not an instant magical cure, and so expectations must be realistic.   Started early on, it can slow down the progress of disease and lessen symptoms and this must be the primary aim.

Homeopathy and Hayfever

Hayfever or Allergic Rhinitis is a common condition affecting more and more people.   Symptoms are triggered by an overreaction in the immune system, to allergens such as pollen, dust, environmental pollutants, chemicals etc.   This causes histamine to be released into the surrounding area causing inflammation of the mucus membranes.   As these irritants are suspended in the air that surrounds us, it is virtually impossible for sufferers to avoid exposure.

The symptom picture varies from person to person, as does the the severity of the symptoms themselves, but they may include runny or blocked nose and sneezing.   Itching, burning and/or watering eyes, and itching in the roof of the mouth or ears.   Sufferers may also experience tightness of the chest and/or wheezing, especially where there is a history of Asthma.   Symptoms may be worse at certain times of the day or night and will almost certainly be worse at certain times of year as different plants release pollen and weather conditions change.

Orthodox medical treatments include 'over the counter' or prescription drugs in the form of antihistamines which reduce the release of histamine, nasal steroids and decongestants which are designed to open the airway.   However, it should be noted that none of these treatments offer a cure, but merely suppress the symptoms on a temporary basis.   The other downside is that while they do nothing to address the underlying condition, they also cause many nasty side effects. Antihistamines may cause drowsiness and dry mouth.   Continued use of nasal steroids may cause septal perforation, and carry an increased risk of eye conditions such as cataracts and when used in children there is a risk of growth delay.   Regular use of nasal decongestants may lead to what is known as rebound congestion, where the nasal passages become permanently blocked and the patient is then bound to use decongestants on a long term basis even after the irritants have ceased.

As we know, in Homeopathy we treat the underlying cause, not just the symptoms.   Therefore, we aim to trigger the body's own healing process and return the immune system to its original state so that it will no longer react to allergens.

In the short term acute remedies can be used to provide relief.   Ready prepared combinations such as the well known Mixed Pollen can even be bought over the counter, and many find this very effective.   However, for a more long lasting solution, there is no better treatment than the individualised constitutional approach that you receive with professional homeopathic treatment.   As with every other condition, symptoms vary from person to person and so while Allium Cepa may work for one patient who has a burning runny nose, streaming eyes, tickly cough, great thirst and feels much worse indoors in the warm, it would be of no use to the patient who has the reverse; swollen burning eyes, a bland runny nose and chesty cough.   This patient may require Euphrasia.

There is an endless list of remedies which can be used in the treatment of hayfever, and the best one for you is the one which fits your personal symptoms picture.   I found mine, and have been completely free of hayfever for four years.   Give it a try.

Homeopathy and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a psychiactric disorder which may be triggered by experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening event such as a serious accident, assault, natural disaster or violence during military service.  As such, PTSD  can happen to anybody at any age, including children.

Symptoms may include but are not limited to severe anxiety, paranoia, flashbacks, nightmares, insomnia, hallucination, situation avoidance, hypervigilance emotional numbing and a sense of isolation among others.  Symptoms can last months or years and have a significant impact on day to day life.  Statistics show that of those affected, only a quarter feel able to seek out help.

Conventional treatments for PTSD include Psychotherapy and psychotropic drugs.  However, some sufferers may find that this approach does not suit them or may have concerns about side effects.  This is where Homeopathy can help.

Due to the individual approach used in Homeopathy, both the consultation and the remedy are tailored to suit the patient.  Not every patient suffering PTSD has suffered the same trauma, or experiences the same symptoms in the same way.  Therefore, it follows that the same remedy will not work for each of these patients.  This is precisely the reason why Homeopathy is so successful in the treatment of something as complex as PTSD.

Surviving the Cold and Flu Season

At this time of year, how ever well we take care of ourselves, it is sometimes inevitable that we will catch colds.  While many people still treat themselves with over the counter preparations and prescription antibiotics, more and more people are turning to alternative medicine, as the reality dawns that by suppressing symptoms with drugs not only will our health not improve, but we will also reduce our bodies ability to resist future infection.  Alternative medicines are also invaluable in the treatment of babies, children, pregnant women and other groups who are unable to use orthodox medicines.  There are many Homeopathic remedies which can be kept in the cupboard at home, ready for use when the dreaded bugs strike.  Following is a list of suggested remedies:

Aconite
This remedy is the Homeopathic first line of defense.  It has a feeling of urgency, such as when you realise you are 'coming down with something'.  Symptoms may appear following exposure to cold but dry weather.  There may be a dry croupy cough which is accompanied by a hoarseness of voice.  The patient would feel worse when cold, or drinking cold drinks and may be short of breath.

Arsenicum
This remedy is useful when the cold or flu is accompanied by vomiting, diarrhoea and fever.  The patient would feel cold but still prefer to be out in the fresh air, and be very thirsty.  Symptoms would be worse in the middle of the night, and the middle of the day. There would be anxiety, restlessness and a desire for company, so this is often a useful remedy for children.

Belladonna
This remedy is suitable where there is high fever together with dilated shining pupils, a throbbing headache and heat to the head and face.  The patient may be delirious and have a glazed look.

Bryonia
An excellent flu remedy where there is much aching and fever with great thirst and a worsening of all symptoms at the slightest movement.  The patient may feel restless, but there would be that feeling that without maintaining a rigid posture the pain would be unbearable.  The body would ache, and there would be fever with perspiration.

Euphrasia
Cold or flu where there is copious bland nasal discharge and burning tears which cause the eyes to become red.  symptoms are worse during the night when lying down and out in fresh air.  There may be a cough with hoarse voice.

Gelsemium
This is a  classic flu remedy.  There would be exhaustion and weakness, a slow developing fever with chills in the back, and  dull aching heaviness in the limbs, head and eyes which may appear hooded.  There would be little thirst.

Natrum Mur
A cold remedy where there is much sneezing at the beginning.  Nasal mucus is thick opaque and clear to white.  There may be cracking in the lips, particularly the centre of the bottom lip, and a tendency toward cold sores.  The patient would feel worse for sympathy and would rather be left alone to wallow.

Pulsatilla
A cold with thick yellow/green mucus and a blocked stuffy nose.  This patient would be worse at night and in a warm room and better for being out in the open air.  Strangely people requiring Pulsatilla have a very dry mouth but do not want to drink.  They may feel weepy and desire lots of sympathy.  Symptoms may appear to change frequently.

Many acute conditions such as colds and coughs can be treated in the home with fantastic results.  However, should you find yourself in a cycle of infections, you may find that you would benefit greatly from constitutional treatment by a qualified homeopath.

Holistic Survival Guide For The Festive Season by Julia Kirby Homeopathy

The lead up to the festive period is always a busy time, and over indulgence is all part of the fun.  However, it can take its toll on mind and body and leave us feeling tired, bloated and generally unwell.  This is why it's always a good idea to plan ahead.

When stocking up on the mince pies and sherry, why not consider stocking up on a few useful homeopathic remedies to see you through the festive season?

One fantastic remedy for this time of year is Nux Vomica, which can be used to help with hangover symptoms.  After all, while in an ideal world we all seek to lead a healthy lifestyle, every now and then it does you good to let your hair down!

In classical homeopathy, each patient will have an individual group of symptoms, and so be prescribed a remedy suited to them alone.  However, in acute conditions and minor complaints it may be possible for patients to treat themselves at home with really terrific results.

Here are a few remedy suggestions to help you through the ailments of the party season:

Arnica:  Frequently used for shock and bruising, Arnica is also good at times when you feel emotionally bruised and battered, such as after a long days shopping or after the in-laws have visited!

Arsenicum:  This is a fabulous remedy where symptoms are similar to food poisoning, so is really useful this time of year when the sickness bugs are doing the rounds.  There may be vomiting, diarrhoea, a deathly complexion and anxiety.  Symptoms often come on during the night, and there is a burning sensation in the digestive tract and a real thirst.  The patient may also be fretful and feel chilly.

Lycopodium:  A useful remedy in cases where a large appetite has lead to bloating, wind (both ends) and heartburn.  Patients may wake in the night frightened, or hungry.  These are often people who lack confidence and are reluctant to try new things, and yet have the contradiction of being a little bossy at home.

Nux Vomica:  As mentioned above, this remedy has a reputation for curing a hangover.  It is also useful for general overindulgence.  There may be headache which is worse for noise and light, nausea and irritability.  These are often people who like to work hard and play hard, existing on a diet of career, coffee and curry.

Sulphur:  This may be useful where there is early morning diarrhoea with excessive perspiration and burning hot feet.  There may be a craving for spicy sugary and/or foods.

Happy Christmas!
